Personal Childhood Blog

People who nurtured and cared for me in my life are my family members. I was raised in a loving caring environment in a typical middle class family with a two parent house hold. I had one older sibling growing up who was four years older than me. I grew up in a small town semi-suburban town surrounded by my grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins.

The first person that fits the nurturing quality is my mother who loved and cared for me and still does to this day. My mother was one of my first teachers. She was just as many mothers she was stern but yet loving still.  She is such a good listener and encouraging in all that I do. She always has had great expectations for her children because she knows that we are capable of anything that we put our minds to. She is the sweetest people I know but one of the strongest protectors of her family as well. I know my mother would give her last for, go to the ends of the earth for, or walk through fire for her children. She was the best example of a mother. As I have grown she becomes my friend not only a parent.

The second person I that loved and adored me is my father. He’s my big teddy bear he is the epitome of a good man. He was a provider and leader of our family. He showed me how a man should provide for his family and love and care for them. My dad use to play with me when I was a little girl, he was always fun and full of joy when it came to his children. He unlike my mother was not strict but we knew we were in trouble if he was disappointed in me or my brother. My father has always be my biggest fan, he supports and cares about every goal, dream or accomplishment I have ever made. He has always had a unique sense of humor and has always had great advice to give for any instance.

The next two people are my grandparents. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents when I was young. If I was not with my parents I was spending time with my grandparents. I loved them to the moon and back I would always say. The day’s that the two of them left my world was the most heartbreaking thing to process as an adolescent the memories I shared with them last a lifetime. I would go over during the week and my grandmother would take me to “Classroom on Wheels” for a few hours and come back and get me we read and play afterwards. She was the one to teach me to tie my shoes, although I was instant on not learning. However all the things she ever taught me, have stayed with me my entire life. As I got a little older I would go over to their house on the weekend, my grandfather would come and pick up my brother and I and we’d spend the whole day there. My granddad would take my mother with him to do some work and then he’d come back and take me to the grocery store with him it was like clockwork every week. My granddad would take me to do different things during the week when I was younger I remember the one time he took me to a parade it was the best experience of my childhood. I always knew my grandparents supported everything I did if I called and asked them to come and do something for or with me they were there. The last moment I was able to experience my grandfather’s pride in me was him coming to see me graduate high school he was beaming from ear to ear with pride that day.

The last person that influenced me when I was young was my brother. Although he would have never admitted it when we were younger he loved, cared and protected me. He was a great big brother the majority of the time. We were always banning together for the cause as we liked to put it. We played together and sometimes got in trouble together.  To this day he is protective of me and supportive if I ever need advice, a favor, or just someone to listen he is there. The day he got married I admit I was worried I thought I might be losing my brother but he never changed he remained the supportive brother he has always been and I gained a sister in his wife.

  1. Hey Angelika, I'm glad to see that you had your grandfather in your life. Unfortunately for me neither of mine were there, one died before I was born and the other we just weren't close. It's good to see when grandparents can be active in a child's life, to pass on legacy and wisdom.

  2. I can relate to your mother being the strict one and to your father being a big teddy bear and not all that strict, as I was the disciplinarian to my children and my husband was always the big teddy bear. It's interesting to see a child's perspective through your eyes, and what your parent's roles looked like to you growing up, and now as an adult, as their roles are very similar to that of mine and my husband. I think when you have a parenting duo, such as your parent's, they compliment one another in a way that balances out where the other one may be lacking. For instance, although I was the strict one, I provided them with consistency. Although my husband was the big teddy-bear-type parent, he provided them with unconditional love. Not that I didn't show unconditional love to my children, or my husband didn't have a hand in disciplining them, we did it in different ways. Although there are many different parenting styles, I believe the most effective parents are the ones who can find the balance that best supports their children as they grow into young adults.

  3. Hello Angelika, first of all I love how you incorporated the pictures within your text! How did you do that? Copy and paste the picture within the word document? Its good to hear your lovely stories and memories that you have of your grandparents, unlike me you lost them both during adolescence and I lost my grandmother this past may she was 93 years old and my grandfather nine years before her. It was truly hard when my grandmother left this world, I had her in my life for a very long time. I could not have imagined losing her in my younger years. Your family cares a great deal for you and that's important and all the great lessons that your grandparents taught you will Always be in your memories and heart!
