Relocating can be a stressor
for children, moving to new environment and having to make new friends. This
is something that I had to overcome in my childhood. It affected cognitively
because I was always wondering of what would happen, how things would turn out.
I related this to children who are of Middle Eastern Decent, and the anxiety
they possibly feel after the mentality of Americans changed after September 11th.
However Derman and her colleagues discussed how children are aware of
racial and cultural differences but do
not necessarily understand them. The people around them and their environment
shapes their opinion thought process.
The Media
~ Showed pictures of people of Middle
Eastern decent and talked about the bad things they did
The
Home
~ Parents might have made
comments that was a generalizations of that particular race
Middle Eastern Families
~ Experiencing being blamed for
actions taken by people of their same ethnicity and in return making a
generalization of Americans
These children who lived
through September 11th had a lot of emotional fears those of Middle
Eastern decent and American children.
They both had to worry what the people they came in contact with on a daily basis might do to
them. Although when children are put together they will typically paly without
any qualms, however when they have been TAUGHT to so prejuidece to a group of
people things will not prevail the same.
