· I can remember when I was younger that my grandmother would
always encourage me to play, and when I was at home I was always encouraged to
play versus watching television as an alternative.
· The biggest difference I see in play today is the innovative
side of things. Most things are technological advanced and ran on a batter or
has to plugged into a wall. There are far and few between toys that cause you
to think or create things. The toys that children prefer to play with these
days all tend to have screens that entertain instead of actually playing.
· I hope that children can learn do more critical thinking and
discover during imaginative pay. I want children to live up to the expectation
of play of Mr. Rogers and practice what they learn during play.
· Oddly enough I always wanted to play teacher as a child and that
is what I worked to become an educator in my adulthood.

Angelika,
ReplyDeleteI really like Albert Einstein's quote, as it really hits the heart of the matter regarding play Vs. learning. Also, as I read your comment about how you were encouraged to play over watching TV, it made me reflect on much of the conversations I have with my preschoolers about what they do on the weekend or after school. Sadly, most of the responses I get involves watching TV or playing video games. In fact, when we go outside for recess, most of the children groan and complain because they DON'T want to go outside. This is a very sad reality of today's children. I wonder what your thoughts are on how early childhood educators could facilitate change in this area of concern? How do we get children outside to play, away from the television sets and video games?
Hi Angelika,
ReplyDeleteGreat selection of toys ! I don't think that I had that many items in my entire life time. I grew up in a very large family and we were what most called poor. As a child I would use household items and dolls mostly to have fun. I can say though that it has made me into the adult that I am today. Even at age 13 when my mother died, I had a great deal of knowledge about how to take care of the house and my siblings. I think that is great that you had your grandmother to encourage you to play rather than what television all day. I attended a workshop today on childhood obesity and that was one of their biggest things was that children don't do enough physical and outdoor play.
Wow Angelica, I had a lot of the same types of toys or knew people who did. I think it is important for children to have toys like these that invoke imagination instead of a computer screen telling them what to think.
