Perspectives on Diversity and Culture

I had a conversation with my brother, a friend and a church member. They all had some similar views as myself. My brother first had a funny look when I asked him what he defined as culture and diversity. He paused and said it is the way our family lives and behaves it is our social norm. Then he gave an example of how as we were growing up our parents did things in a manner and now that he has a family they do things differently. They have taken some of the cultural things from each other's family and combined them together.

I had a conversation with a friend who we knowingly do not share same religious beliefs. We do have the foundation of both believing in God. I asked her what is diversity and she responded that it isthe difference between people. I asked her what culture is she said it was the way people express their differences. Then finally I asked a church member and they said culture is something you live in or have grown up in, but diversity is when you throw something different into that culture.
I think that if I was to relate these answers to our studies I would conclude that they all would be a part of the dominant culture but I really feel they would not force others to participate. I also think they have different levels to recognizing their deep culture to move beyond the surface.

  1. Hi Angelika,
After reading some of our colleagues blogs it seems as if most to all interviewed others with the same perspectives on both culture and diversity. Do you believe we would have the same similarities with complete strangers? Or do you believe we hold these similarities with our family and friends because we share the same values and morals?

  2. I find it interesting that you think they would be found as part of the dominant culture even though it seems as though you made sure to ask very different people. I would like to comment on Angelika's comment and say what GREAT questions you put forth this week! I believe that even though we come from different places, and have different beliefs and ideas, we tend to bond with people who believe similar ideas and thoughts that we ourselves have. This creates bonds that hold friendships together, so I think it could be interesting to go out and ask this question of complete strangers! Thank you for posting this question and bringing it to light!
